A rich life
When I was a teenager, I started babysitting for a family that I became quite close with. Their little boy was three months old when I started, and by the time I left for college they were expecting kid number three.
Sharon and Mark were half a generation older than me—like a young aunt and uncle or older cousins—and spending time in their home gave me a preview of what life could look like as successful young professionals. So many of the things they told me—about college and working and being in relationships—have stayed with me.
One day Sharon explained why she always bought the thick, super absorbent paper towels. “They make me feel rich,” she said.
It was the first time I had considered a small thing could make a person feel wealthy.
Now, American culture is far too obsessed with money, and some of the wealthiest people I’ve known are also some of the most lonely (truth). But I like the idea of what makes you feel metaphorically wealthy. What makes your life feel expansive and indulgent?
When I sat down to make a list, I was surprised that most of my indulgences cost very little or are free. Here’s my list of what makes life feel rich.
—Taking twenty minutes to read a book in the morning.
—Having a fully stocked selection of favorite teas to choose from.
—A clean and tidy house (it makes me feel rich and organized!).
—Fresh flowers in the bathroom (or even just a sprig of leaves).
—Sending cards to friends and loved ones.
—Time to do art—or just being around art (museums, art books, etc).
—A nice collection of scarves.
—Good soap and lotion.
—Time to take baths, rather than showers.
—Being able to help support causes and people I believe in (via Patreon, Substack, or donations), funding a ever-so-slightly better world.
—Hiking weekly (especially on weekdays, when other people are working).
Looking at it now, it strikes me that the greatest wealth is just time to spend doing the things you enjoy.
Everyone’s list is going to look wildly different, and I’d love to hear what’s on yours. As I get organized in this back-to-school season, I want to weave in as many of these items into my days as possible, to revel in the feeling of having a rich life.
I hope your autumn feels rich and valuable.
