One of my first memories of nature-related wonder is from kindergarten. The teacher walked the class outside and had us close our eyes to listen. Suddenly a mocking bird began singing, and now every time I hear a mockingbird, I remember that moment.

Other early memories of wonder for me center around a book of Japanese children’s poems (The Prancing Pony) which was given to me as a child. The artwork is made of collaged washi paper and it’s gorgeous. I spent hours looking at this book plus my set of “Childcraft” encyclopedias. Later on, the stories of Hans Christian Anderson gave me that same sense of wonder.

Oh, how fun! I'm not sure I know what a mocking bird sounds like--but now I'm going to seek it out! Excellent teaching moment, eh? Thanks so much for sharing.

And yes, books were definitely sites of wonder for me too--I was obsessed with all the flower fairy books by Cicely Mary Barker 😊❤️

We are moving tomorrow. Last night, at 11 pm, I was going through some boxes and found copies of flower fairy books from my childhood!

Given how much you love Japan, I expect you would also love The Prancing Pony (I sometimes see used copies pop up on Abe Books) 🎏

Water skeeters! I forgot their name but I totally remember trying to catch them as kids. Ha!

My first and most regular place for wonder is the Pacific Ocean. I spent part of our my young years in San Diego and every week went to the beach with our grandparents. I always had to stop to see and smell the ocean fully before my sister and I ran to play. I still get that feeling when I'm close to the ocean.

Oh and I bought the book. Excited to dig into it. Thank you for the recommendation.

Ahh, what a wonderful thing to have a childhood on a beach. I am the same way, it feels like awe just to be there. And I hope you have fun with the book! I find it a treasure trove.

I love that you tried to catch water skeeters as well 😊❤️
